Questions about counseling.

Here are the answers to some questions you may have about Marriage and Family counseling.

  • What do you do in Counseling?

Therapy is all about talking and listening.  That’s the basics. There are different ways of doing this, but basically it is all talk therapy. The therapist will help you set goals and ways to meet those goals.

The therapist usually gives suggestions and might give you something to read or write between therapy sessions.

  • Why should I go to therapy?

Do you have circumstances in your life that seems overwhelming and confusing?  Maybe it is time to talk to someone. Mental, emotional, physical, medical or just everyday stuff can get you down. The therapist is there to help you find the answers to your questions.

  • Who does therapy?

All kinds of people go to therapy. With a better understanding of what therapy is all about, it has lost the stigma it once had and that has opened the door for people to get the help that they need.

  • How long does it take?

The therapy session usually lasts for about 45 minutes. Everything depends on your needs and desires.

In general therapy lasts about 12 sessions, this depends on how you are doing and how it is meeting your needs.

Somewhere down the line you should not longer have a need for therapy and you will stop therapy.

There may be a time you might like to come back to therapy for a tune up and check up. But that’s up to you and your therapist.

  • How much does it cost?

Some therapists charge upwards of $150.00 for a one hour session. I charge less.

You can talk with me about fees before your first visit.

Many therapists work with a sliding scale. It’s important for you to understand that therapy is worth the price for your peace of mind.

  • Will everything be private?

Everything you talk about in therapy is confidential. It’s the law.

That’s the great thing about therapy. You are assured that what you talk about will never leave the therapy room. You have the freedom to “let it all out” without being judged.

However, there is an exception that involves harm to self or others.

  • Does it work?

Talk therapy works.

But it only works as far as you put yourself into the sessions and the therapy recommendations.
