Domestic Violence and the Holidays

Domestic Violence and the Holidays

The Holidays cause tension and stress. With the increased stress and agitation comes domestic violence and abuse. There are many options and silence is not one of them.

  • If you are in a violent relationship get out. There are people who can help you. If he or she is abusing you it will only escalate. Stop now and don’t let the violence increase, because it will. Get counseling fast and recognize the situation you are in. Nobody has the right to hurt you or verbally abuse you.
  • If you know someone who is being abused, help them see that their relationship is troubled and their partner is not going to change. Often those caught in an abusive relationship are lost in guilt and self blame. Come along side of them and help them make healthy choices.
  • If you witness domestic abuse don’t ignore it and hope it will go away. Call 911. So many times people think it is not there business. Some think it is just for the moment and they will work it out. It is better to be proactive and get immediate solutions than to wait and see.
  • Victims should have a safe place to deal with escalating violence. Including getting away immediately. Do some homework and find out what resources are available in your community and county.

Domestic violence can be stopped. The abuser and those being abused can find help to end the violence.
