…Betrothed to Joseph…
We don’t know the details of Mary and Joseph’s relationship.
There is speculation that he was a much older and possibly a widower. We do know that they followed Jewish marital laws and traditions. Mary and Joseph were betrothed.
This arrangement was legally binding, much like an engagement but with more serious financial and social consequences if broken. Their marriage was more than likely arranged by their parents who negotiated the deal.
All this is so different from today. We base so much of our marriages on love, feelings, and emotions. These love feelings are all fleeting and change constantly. Financial and social arrangements made by parents may in the long run help a marriage to last.
