Family Advice: Love Your Real Enemies

Excerpt from my book:

Love, A 40 day Biblical Approach to Love

Matthew 5:44

But I say to you, love your enemies…

So you thought this book was all about romance, flowers, and puppies.

  • Well that is not what love is about.

God love, Christian love is about even loving the unlovable.

Face the facts, you probably have few real “enemies” and yes, you have to somehow love them.

  • But let’s bring this home.

The people we have the most trouble with are usually friends and family. Those motley groups of people you rub shoulders with, share meals with, and borrow stuff from often are at the center of your emotional battlefields.

  • Family and friends are sometimes the worst of enemies because they know us so well.

They can hurt us, disappoint us, and we can’t get rid of them because, well they’re family. Think about the last holiday gathering, the birthday party, or wedding. You cringed a bit, didn’t you? Family time can bring out all kinds of stuff that hurts and strains our good nature. So we may have some “real” enemies out there but the truly “real” enemies are “us”.

  • What does God tell us?

To love your family, I mean enemy.

  1. OK, what is the biggest hassle that is going on in your extended family right now?
  2. What can you do to bring about a little peace with the situation? Are you personally part of the problem or solution?
  3. What is the dynamic in the situation? Do you ignore it? Do you feed the flames of the negative situation?
  4. Take time to really pray for the problem and expect God to provide an answer.

  • Not getting this love thing? Let’s talk @
