What happens in counseling?

what happens in counseling

So what happens in Marriage Counseling?

Marriage is hard work.

Getting along with someone 24/7 for the rest of your life can seem daunting. But a good marriage, even a great marriage can be accomplished. But like I said it takes hard work.

As a therapist I work with couples through counseling who are struggling with the ups and downs in their marriages to reach a balance. I help couples open themselves up to a renewal of the reasons they married in the first place.

During therapy I use:

  • Guided discussion.

We get past the finger pointing, blaming and deal with the real issues troubling your marriage. I say guided because

I am actively involved in helping the couples deal with the important stuff in their relationship and not the little detours that often cause the most hurt and pain.

  • Homework assignments.

Yes, homework. The real work of counseling takes place outside the office. We work together to make a difference in your “real world”.

That may mean taking the stuff learned in counseling and practicing it at home where it really matters.

  • Goal setting.

You have to know where you’ve been and where you are going. Planning for the ups and downs in your marriage is a key to a lasting relationship.

I will help you with a plan for a marriage success.

All of the things that happen in counseling won’t help your marriage unless you are willing to take a chance and do the work that needs to be done to make things better.

That means you both have to change, to stretch, to look deep into your hearts and make the decisions that might hurt now but will make a world of difference tomorrow and the next day.

Please understand that I know what I am talking about. Along with my education and the degrees hanging on the wall I bring the experience of 42 years of marriage.

So I know a little bit about what you might be going through in your marriage from a very practical level.

  • Take the first step and give me a call. Let’s talk about your situation and what counseling might do for you.
