Proverbs 12:1

Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge…

• The writer of proverbs got it right.

To gain knowledge you have to be disciplined. Conversely to be disciplined produces knowledge. Did you get that straight? If you expect to pass the test, get the promotion, or make the deal you need to study and work hard. In other words, be disciplined. When you get pulled over by a police officer, when you have late fees on your checking account, and when you get an upset stomach from eating too much, these all are forms of discipline that leads to knowledge. A big part of learning is to know to do this and not do that.

• We must continuously be in a learning cycle, first to survive; second, to prosper.

God who is in control of every segment of our lives is constantly challenging us to the higher standards of His will. We can never expect to be in a state of neutrality. There will always be something new to learn and experience through this “God guided”, life of ours. When we mess up in our choices and directions we need to expect new knowledge through discipline. Those bumps in the road are there on purpose. We can learn from them or repeat them until the discipline of the road teaches us.

• Discipline and knowledge go hand in hand.

It’s not easy but for us humans it is the only way to learn and grow. Learn to love discipline.

1. What is God trying to teach you now?
2. What hassles are you in now that could be seen as a God guided experience?
3. Set back and take a good look at where God is pointing you. Go in that direction or take the discipline that will come with other choices.
4. Loving others is not for the lazy. Love takes discipline and sticking to it for the long run. What is God teaching you in your love relationships?
